There have been a few implementations of this for Wordpress before, but I the versions I found were either too old or the sites were down, so I implemented it again for myself as a widget, and I’m releasing it under the GPL and MIT licenses. Take your pick.

The On This Day In… widget:

Installation:

Download onthisday.zip and unzip, or get it from the monkinetic widgets repository.

Upload to wp-content/plugins/widgets/, then enable the plugin under “Plugins” in the admin interface. Under “Presentation > Sidebar Widgets”, drag the “On This Day In…” widget to the sidebar you want it to appear in, then save.
