"Honey, I'm home!"

My name is Steve Ivy, and I'm a native of Virginia Beach, Virginia. I came to know about ArtLab through the University of the Nations, an international university run by Youth With A Mission, a Christian non-profit organization based in Kona, Hawaii. ArtLab is the media lab of the College of Communications. We do communications projects for YWAM and the College sometimes, but mostly we work for German or European businesses.

As I was saying- I first met the guys here at ArtLab when several of the staff taught in a couple of my graphic design courses. They taught predominantly on software or information technology, but what fired my imagination was that this was a bunch of design/technology geeks who were doing what they loved to do, and doing it with conviction! There was a freedom to experiment, to stretch one's own design skills, try out the latest technology, get to work with clients... I was hooked. I knew that this was the place for me. That was Kona, Hawaii, 1992. January 1996 I walked through the door to ArtLab Europe, Altensteig, Germany. I had had the opportunity to have ArtLab staff teach in a total of four of my courses, and nothing had put me off my goal: work with these guys.

I've been here for six months now, and it's been an interesting time, to be sure. I came here not sure what I'd be doing, but I've had the pleasure of facilitating our move onto the web- doing a lot of research into the best production tools, teaching HTML, and trying to figure out how I, a designer by training, ended up as ArtLab's webguy. Well, I'm swamped and loving it. Amidst all the fun I've been working on this little baby you've stumbled on- but that's for another paragraph.

This site is my first attempt at on-line publishing. It's also an attempt to fulfill four missing credits in my curriculum, so after mucking around if you want to give me some feedback I'd appreciate it...

I'm leaving for three months to finish up my last course for my B.A. in Graphic Design, so I confess this site won't be updated for a while. But check back once in a while- I hope to update it at least monthly. Anyway, look around, get to know ArtLab through the site, and enjoy. This site is neither complete nor quite up to my own standards- I'll be remedying that over the next few weeks. Well, have fun!
