I want to use my domain!

Friday, June 23rd, 2000

I really want to use my domain. I own http://www.redmonk.net/, but I don’t have a place to host it that either 1) has “Manila”, or 2) is under my control so that I can do what I damn well please with it. Until I can find a hosting solution that meets those requirements, Redmonk stays here.

http://www.redmonk.net/ is currently hosted wiith Llamacom.com, a small hosting setup somewhere in Iowa I think. It’s cheap, and I can ftp stuff there. But since I started using “Manila”, I’ve been spoiled. So all my effort goes here, instead of there.

Being a good web developer without my own server, is so… embarassing. sigh.

I think if I ever wrote a CMS, the combination of “Frontier”/”Manila” would be my inspiration and model. I hope “Dave” would see that as a compliment. “;->”

BTW, “Dave” is a prolific writer. And I’ve never been hooked on a website like I’m hooked on “Scripting News”. Thanks, Dave.

Archive links added to Manila Sites: go “UserLand”!

This post brought to you by Killian’s Irish Red.

Getting stuff done as a coder, on the web, is hard when you’re tired and easily distracted. There’s so much out there…

BBEdit on ETP

BBEdit is on ETP: “This Manila Site doesn’t suck ;-)” Update: This site is now Chris Smith’s personal “ETP” site. Bummer. “Sorry, nothing to see here.”

Reviewing IE5/Mac.

Manila, IE5

Saturday, March 25th, 2000

ManilaPalooza is today! We should be able to find a pointer to the ManilaPalooza webcast here.

I’ve downloaded and am using IE5 for the Mac. Being a weblogger can have it’s perks sometimes! (Thanks, Brent, Brad!) It’s nice in some ways- it fixes some of the most horrendous user interface bugs that 4.5 had, but introduces some nice, “normal-for-MS” inconsistencies… like using their own menu-highlight colors, instead of the one I chose in my appearance settings. Why can’t they leave well enough alone!

Bugaboo #2: IE5 doesn’t ship with it’s own Java VM. It depends on Apple’s MRJ - which I didn’t install with OS9. So I’m Java-less until I dig out my Mac OS install CD.

Time for a makeover

Wednesday, March 8th, 2000

OK, in recent days a number of blogs have been madeover… I’m tiring of the U2/Mondrian look and am ready for a change. So look for a new face to “Redmonk.Net” in the near future. If any of you have opinions about this matter, let’s “talk about it”.

I can even “Edit This Page” from WebTV. That is just too cool.

I’m slipping on the “ETP Top 100″. I don’t even show up on the Weblogs.Com “Hotlist”, though. ;-<

Kaliber10000: A designer’s site on an overdose of IconFactory Yowzer!

“Jim Roepcke” has a new job and title! Congratulations, Jim!

Popularity growing, family travels, geek stuff

Sunday, February 13th, 2000

Wow. This has been a wild week here at “Redmonk.Net”. I’ve made the permanent list of links on André’s page, and on Robert’s too. I’m down to #23 on the “ETP Top 100″, but it’s not the stats that matter, right?

My mom’s site, http://macmom.editthispage.com, is growing. I had forgotten that Mom first worked with computers when she was printing punch cards for a room-sized IBM “clunker”.

We’re headed to Colorado for a week, for a wedding. Dave says that there’s going to be a blizzard in the Rockies. We’ll see! My wife wants to go skiing. I’m going to work. ;-( But- I have a new iBook to work on! ;-)

Back to code…

OK, not quite yet. interesting tidbit: Robert at “Bump” was one of the founding MacSurfers! Rock on, Robert! MacSurfer has been in my daily rotation since Jan ‘96.

Another Web ‘99 Atlanta veteran, “Jim Roepcke” nails the first rule of weblogging.

I have a client - OK, a relative ;-) - who wants a “Frontier”/”Manila” intra/internet site. I may even achieve my dream of having my own Linux server as part of the deal. Of course, that means that this shirt will have even more relavance for me! Of course, I’m so swamped right now that it’s going to be months before this is a reality.

COM XML-RPC, new iBook, and more

Friday, February 11th, 2000

We’ve re-posted the “COM XML-RPC” object- the first version had a bug in the type library that meant you had to instantiate it with the version number.

Wheeeeeeee! This is my first posting ever from my new… iBook! Yes, we’d been talking about it for a loooong time, and finally we decided to do it. We’re headed cross country next week, and I need to keep in touch with the rest of the world. How would I update this site without it?

Robert over at Bump has a picture of himself in his office - check out the iBook. It looks like Robert is resting comfortably in an Aeron chair from Herman Miller. Lucky bum.

Robert’s been listening to Rush, a fine Canadian band - one of the finest. The title of Bump today is from “Subdivisions”.

Mike Murry is having trouble using the “COM XML-RPC” object from Cold Fusion. I don’t have any Cold Fusion experience (yet)- could someone help him out?

A web morality tale from WebFaust. Ouch.

Mac Mom: “It worked!” My mother joins the ranks of the Manila Newbies. If André’s girlfriend and Brent’s wife (link?) can do it, so can my mother. Go Mom!

Adobe releases SVG plugins for the browsers, and converters for Illustrator.

I think SVG is a good idea, and I think with Adobe behind it, it won’t go the way of VRML, a 3d format that has faded from view. As an XML-based format, it will be easy to generate dynamic vector-based graphics, oh yeah. Now- if Adobe wants this format to be widely adopted, put out Freehand converters. Sure, Macromedia’s probably working on it, but Adobe has the head start. Show some internet good will and do it, Adobe.

Robert Ochiallini outlines Bump’s business strategy for the forseeable future. I’ve decided that I’m aligning my strategy with Robert’s, and I am actively looking for Redmonk.Net to be acquired. As an outlet for “COM XML-RPC” products, and sporting a spiffy new vaguely Germanic interface, we at Redmonk.Net believe that we would be a valuable addition to Bump’s internet offerings.
