Mac OS X Web Services Apps

Friday, June 28th, 2002

Brent is thinking about creating a mailing list for Mac OS X application developers who are working in the area of webservices, specifically desktop apps for web services. I think this is a great idea, and will help show others what a great platform Mac OS X is!

If you’re working on a desktop web-services app for OS X, let Brent know if you’d be interested in this.

R.E.M. has released an album’s worth of remixed songs from REVEAL. This is just so cool. The story of how it happened is here.

Genius Bar (or “Weblogger in a fedora”)

Thursday, June 27th, 2002

David McCusker had a crappy experience with the “Geniuses” at this local Apple Store’s Genius Bar.

He also got better service once he mentioned he would review the experience on his website. Maybe we all should stick “Weblogger” badges in our fedoras when dealing with Apple?

Fetchmail, procmail, SpamAssassin

Thursday, June 27th, 2002

I’ve got some time this evening, so I’m going through the process of setting up fetchmail, procmail, and spamassassin on my TiBook. (fetchmail and procmail come installed on OS X) I hate SPAM.

Update: It worked! I’ve actually disabled my main pop account in Mail, and I’m letting fetchmail do the work for me. For now Mail is still filtering mailing lists and stuff, but soon I’ll get procmail to do that too, since procmail’s rules are actually useful…

Books

Tuesday, June 25th, 2002

I went to the public library to day and came back with an armload of books. The Phoenix Library system rocks. My titles:

  • The Cathedral and the Bazaar (for fun)
  • Server-based Java Programming (to get a better understanding of how Java handles networking etc)
  • Enterprise JavaBeans (expanding my horizons some)
  • The Humane Interface (HCI design, by Jeff Raskin, Mac interface designer)
  • Mapping Web Sites (information architecture brushup)

Fires in Arizona

Sunday, June 23rd, 2002

The “Rodeo” and “Chedeski” fires in north eastern Arizona have now eaten through 300,000 acres of high country forest.

The fire has burned about 300,000 acres - about 479 square miles - since Tuesday. As many as 25,000 people have fled homes from more than half a dozen towns.
